SPEAK OUT: Anticipating the End of the World Dec. 21?

Is the apocalypse coming? Are you ready?

  In 1999, tales of the “Y2K” bug sounded the doomsday alarm and people took rock legend Prince’s anthem “1999” to heart on Dec. 31, 1999: They say two thousand zero zero party over, oops out of time. So tonight I’m gonna party like its nineteen ninety-nine. When people awoke on Jan. 1, 2000, most computers were running just fine and the world kept turning. Now, stories of the impending apocalypse (Dec. 21, 2012, according to some interpretations of the Mayan calendar) are rampant, even with reputable organizations like NASA debunking many of the most common apocalyptic theories. The End of the World—Again: 11-11-11

Some couples are racing to get married while other folks predict an apocalyptic day. What will 11-11-11 really unravel?

What is 11-11-11 in addition to being the last time in your lifetime that you will live through a perfectly-dated palindrome? A palindrome is a number or word reading the same backwards as forwards. Of course you could live 100 more years and prove me wrong. In which case, let me congratulate you ahead of time, as I won’t be around to do it on November 11, 2111. The last 11-11-11 took folks on a wild ride So what is 11-11-11? It’s a curious day if history is any indicator. On the last 11-11-11, a bizarre meteorological event sent heads spinning. The “Great Blue Norther” of November 11, 1911 was a cold snap that hit the U.S. taking some cities on a wild ride as it broke record highs and lows for the same day. Temperatures rose then dropped …
