Layaway Makes a Big Comeback for the 2012 Holiday Shopping Season

  While it may only be October, it’s never too early to start thinking about holiday shopping. In this economy, some shoppers are fretting over being able to afford that special toy, bauble or other item that they know will bring a smile to their children, spouse, friend or family member. Consider layaway as a way to spread payments out over time, and be able to check things off those holiday lists. Popular during the Great Depression in the 1930s, layaway fell out of fashion in the 1980s as credit card usage became widespread. Many companies are once again offering the service, which allows customers to make installment payments on an item, sometimes with a small fee added to the item’s price for the company’s administrative costs. Greenbelt Kmart Spared in First Round of Closings

Greenbelt Kmart survived the wave of Sears Holding closings, but Ellicott City's Sears Grand is set to close.

The Kmart on 8829 Greenbelt Road has been spared in the first wave of closures announced Friday by company Sears Holding Corporation. Eighty stores nationwide are on the closing list with more future closings projected. In a year-end press release, Sears Holding announced it would be closing 100 to 120 Kmart and Sears full-line stores. Currently, however, Greenbelt's store is open and off the list. On Tuesday, Greenbelt Kmart Manager Janice Maxey said she thinks it's going to stay that way. She said she thought the store was safe and safe for good.
