School Ends Friday, Greenbelt Camps Begin June 18

With the last bell for the 2011-2012 school year about to sound, the Greenbelt Recreation Department is preparing for a kaleidoscope of summer camps.

The last day of school for students in Prince George's County Public Schools is Friday. Then—at least from many a students perspective—10 glorious weeks and 3 long days later, the school bell will ring in a new school year on Monday, August 20. With school's end around the corner, and the official start of summer not far behind that, it's a good time to consider some of Greenbelt Recreation Department's summer camp offerings. Most of the camps offer four separate sessions with start dates throughout the summer. The first session for many of the camps begins on June 18. With Improved Economy Comes Return of Adult Basketball League

The recreation department is once again putting on an adult basketball league this year.

After a three-year hiatus, the men’s winter basketball league hosted by the Greenbelt Recreation Department has returned.  The league, which features six teams (the Greenbelt Road Shell, the White Lightning, DCH, The Resistance, the Hollie Hole Mob and the Metro All-Stars) is still reeling from the recession. “In the past, it wasn't uncommon for us to have 20 teams,” said Andrew Phelan, Sports and Recreation Coordinator for the Greenbelt Recreation Department. “We took a big hit during the recession.” Before 2008, local business paid the bulk of registration fees for competing teams.
