The fire in Prince George's County left a house of worship in ashes.
Although parishoners celebrated 2013 in the church only hours before it lit up in flames, an Oxon Hill church will not be hosting a service in 2013 yet. At about 7:30 a.m. on New Year's Day, Prince George's County firefighters were called out to First Wesleyan Church of Oxon Hill at 1801 Iverson Street when reports came in that the one-story structure was ablaze, according to PGFD Spokesman Mark Brady. Two areas inside were burning, Brady said, and had reached the roof before firefighters could control the flames 25 minutes later. However, no firefighters or civilians were injured in the fire. More transportation coming to Prince George’s mega-development.
An additional transit route has launched at National Harbor in Oxon Hill to shuttle passengers to and from spots in Washington, DC, and northern Virginia. The shuttle service opened Sept. 22, backed by Peterson Cos., the site's developer. Residents, workers, and hotel guests at the $4 billion development will get free rides on the shuttle, but all others will pay $10, reports The Washington Business Journal. Stops include the King St. Metro in Alexandria, Union Station, and the Old Post Office Pavillion. Public access to National Harbor has been an issue since it opened in 2008. The development also is served by a Metro bus route.

Poll finds support for National Harbor casino.
The push to bring gambling and a $1 billion casino to Prince George’s County is under debate this week following testimony in Annapolis by the county executive. County Executive Rushern L. Baker is lobbying the Maryland State Budget and Taxation Committee to amend portions of a bill that could lead to the legalization of gambling and slots in the county. The amendments, among other items, would allow a $1 billion casino to be built at the National Harbor in Oxon Hill. “I believe that if gaming is expanded to Prince George’s County, it should be done by developing a high-end destination facility that will attract visitors, tourist and conferences...,” Baker said this week before the Maryland State Senate Budget and Taxation Committee. “I …

The Raiders beat Oxon Hill in their regular season opener Tuesday night.
On the heels of two straight trips to the Class 4A state semifinals, Eleanor Roosevelt’s basketball took its first steps towards a third consecutive trip Tuesday night, cruising to a 68-55 win against visiting Oxon Hill in its regular season opener. The Raiders held a narrow 36-29 advantage at the end of the first half but pulled away behind the strong offensive play of Malachi Alexander (17 points), Jesse Ason (15 points) and Chaun Miller (14 points). Roosevelt led by as much as 16 during the second half and by no less than 11 points during any point of the fourth quarter. Magic Kingdom backs out of hotel development in Prince George’s County.
What was once billed as Disney’s first resort in the Washington region and a boon to National Harbor in Prince George’s County is no more. The company has backed out of plans to build a hotel at the Oxon Hill development. Late last week, Disney announced it was pulling out of the project, citing that National Harbor did not fit in with its current lineup of projects, which currently includes a theme park in Shanghai, according to The Washington Post. The Walt Disney Company purchased the 11 acres of land, which sit on a hill with views of Virginia and the District, for $11 million in 2009. OXON HILL – Versatility is an asset that football coaches crave, and Tamlin “B.J.” Antoine provides more than enough for the Eleanor Roosevelt Raiders. This is a great resource for residents! Free transportation is a luxury, but $20 round trip ($40 with a date) for non residents isn't going to help bring foot traffic. It could potentially backfire as guests at the hotels get shuttled away leaving a ghost town behind. I wonder if these shuttles will run late enough to serve the bar-going crowd. more ›
