Work to replace switches will shutter four Green Line stations in northern Prince George's County this weekend.
Track work will shutter four metro stations on the northern end of the Green Line this weekend. The stations to be closed are West Hyattsville, Prince George's Plaza, College Park and Greenbelt. Transit travelers will be able to take buses between Greenbelt and Fort Totten. Metro warns that riders should add up to 50 minutes to their travel times as a result. They also recommend that those who normally use the Greenbelt station to park should instead use the Orange Line New Carrollton Station. The work will begin at around 10 p.m. May 4, and will continue through Sunday, May 6. Discussion at last night's Metro budget hearing in Prince George's County shines spotlight on concerns of disabled commuters.
About two dozen commuters, the overwhelming majority of them users of Metro's disability access services, protested proposed Metro fare hikes at a public hearing last night in Prince George's County at Hyattsville United Methodist Church. Much of their anger was directed at the 40 cent increase in the base $7 fare for MetroAccess, which provides transportation for disabled commuters who otherwise would have a difficult time using bus or rail services. Metro's 2013 budget unveiled last January proposed hiring more than 1,000 employees in a plan that also raises bus, rail and parking rates across the system. A search for an unauthorized person in a tunnel between West Hyattsville and Fort Totten has caused delays on the Green Line.
Metro riders on the Green Line are still experiencing significant delays after two incidents sent ripples up and down the line. At West Hyattsville, members of the Metro Transit Police Department searching for an unauthorized person reported in the tunnel between West Hyattsville and Fort Totten Metro stations. According to Dan Stessel, director of communications at the WMATA, the unauthorized person was reported at around 4:20 p.m. He had not yet been found as of 5:38 p.m. Further down the line at the Navy Yard Metro Station, trains were delayed as rescue crews responded to a medical emergency there.

Green Line trains will be sharing track this weekend in Metro work zones.
After the holiday break, Green Line track work is back on the schedule. From 10 p.m. Friday through closing Sunday, Green Line trains will share one track between Georgia Ave-Petworth and Fort Totten to allow for rail maintenance. Green Line trains will also share one track between Naylor Road and Branch Ave to allow for fastener renewal. Metro has announced that Green Line trains will operate every 15 minutes. Metro has Green Line trains single tracking it between College Park and Greenbelt this weekend.
Green Line trains will use a single track over the weekend between College Park and Greenbelt due to track inspection. Metro has also announced that every other train will turn back at College Park station during daytime hours. This weekend's work will begin at 10 p.m. Friday and continue through system closing on Sunday night. Parking is free at all Metrorail parking facilities on Thanksgiving.
Green Liners will get a break as will all lines, as Metro states there will be no significant track work over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Parking is free at all Metrorail station parking facilities on Thursday and Metrorail will operate on a Sunday schedule, opening at 7 a.m. and closing at midnight. Veterans Day weekend has major track work in store for the Green Line from November 10-13.
The Green Line is slated for some serious work Veterans Day weekend, and the work starts Thursday night. North end stations—including Greenbelt, College Park, Prince George's Plaza and West Hyattsville—should have an easier time of it than stops closer to the southern end of the Green Line, where the work is focused—between L’Enfant and Southern Avenue stations.
