The Raiders are just one win away from the state semifinals.
If Eleanor Roosevelt High School is to continue its quest for a state championship, it's going to have to overcome the team that halted its two previous attempts. The Raiders will look to end a four-game losing streak – including two playoff defeats – against Henry A. Wise when they travel to take on the Pumas in the 4A South title game on Saturday at 1 p.m. Saturday's winner advances to face either Arundel (10-1) or Broadneck (9-2) in the 4A state semifinals. "They want to play next week," Roosevelt coach Tom Green said of his players. "That's the bottom line. You've got to win this week to play next week. The kids understand what's at stake. They know the region is at stake. They know a chance to play in the semis and represent our …

Roosevelt lost 27-26 to Flowers on Saturday.
Despite three turnovers and a slew of penalties and miscues, Eleanor Roosevelt still found itself with the ball and a shot at victory late in Saturday's game against C.H. Flowers. One final mistake did them in, though, as Roosevelt senior quarterback Jairus Cook was sacked and fumbled at the Flowers 18-yard line, giving the Jaguars the ball and a 27-26 victory. The Raiders were given several reprieves on their final drive, as they had a potential game-ending interception ruled incomplete, picked up a first down courtesy of a defensive holding penalty on 4th-and-15 and another off of a roughing the passer flag on 2nd-and-13. Flowers' errors put the Raiders in position to score the winning points, as Roosevelt faced 2nd-and-5 from the …

The Raiders won 13-8 on Saturday.
Everyone in the stadium knew where the ball was headed, and Eleanor Roosevelt High School safety Jairus Cook got there first. Cook intercepted a pass intended for Bowie star receiver Jeremiah Hendy – a University of Maryland commitment – with 3:13 remaining to help the Raiders hold on for a 13-6 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday. "I told my corner, Donta Williams, that I had his back," Cook said, "'because he was checking Jeremiah Hendy, and of course he's a great player. So he put a good move on him, and I told him I had his back, so I just stepped in there and just waited for the ball to come to me. The interception was the second of the day for Cook, who now has four in the last two games. The Raiders (6-1) also recovered two fumbles …

The Raiders defeated the Clipper 41-13 on Saturday afternoon.
The Eleanor Roosevelt High School football team's first full game without injured starting quarterback Shawn Petty had its share of bumps, but not enough to slow down the Raiders' high-octane attack. Senior running back Cody Acker ran for a career-high 169 yards and two touchdowns as Roosevelt piled up 366 yards rushing in a 41-13 win over visiting Oxon Hill on Saturday. Senior Jairus Cook and junior B.J. Antoine shared the quarterbacking duties in place of Petty, who injured his collarbone in Roosevelt's 47-7 victory over DuVal last week. Petty is expected to miss a month of action, but could be back before the end of the regular season. "I think the quarterbacks – both of them – played well," Roosevelt coach Tom Green said. "And I think …

The Raiders lost their first game of the season on Saturday.
After its offense missed out on two golden opportunities to put Saturday's game against Eleanor Roosevelt out of reach, the Wise High defense needed to come up with one last stop to preserve a victory. The defense delivered as sophomore cornerback Chaudlier Shepard intercepted a pass with 1:14 remaining to clinch a 22-14 win. "We have faith in our defense, so we knew our defense would [make] up for us," junior running back Uriah Bethea said in reference to his team's lackluster offensive performance. Bethea ran for 121 yards and a pair of one-yard touchdowns on 23 workmanlike carries. The second of his scores – and his accompanying two-point conversion run – put Wise ahead 22-14 with 6:41 remaining in the game. On Roosevelt's next drive, …
