City Removes Hoops at Mandan Rd. Court to Thwart Crime

Police said children played in a neighboring field when a gunfight broke out last week.

  The basketball hoops near Mandan Field are gone and police have tightened security near Mandan Road and Ora Glen Drive in Greenbelt, after a gunfight broke out by a basketball court near children at play last week. "There was some sort of dispute there on the court or close to it," Greenbelt Police Capt. Thomas Kemp said, "and that resulted in the shots." The local Boys and Girls Club was slated to use the soccer field, and police confirmed Friday that children were using the field the night of Aug. 28, when the shooting unleashed a stray bullet that hit a teenage girl who was walking home at around 6:23 p.m. "I know there were kids up there practicing soccer and there were concerned parents and concerned coaches," said Kemp. The police definitely need to do their job. The police need to patrol areas of concern more than other areas. They need to put the hoops back up because they never should have been taken down.   more ›

Police Offer Up To $1,000 Cash For Information on Greenbelt Gunfight

Two suspects engaged in a gunfight that injured a teenage bystander, according to police. Now they're offering a reward.

Greenbelt Police Report: Teen Bystander Shot in Gunfight, 3 Drug Arrests, 2 Burglaries

Greenbelt Police supplied the following arrest information, from Aug. 24 to Aug. 29. Charges and arrests do not indicate a conviction.

A Greenbelt gunfight broke out, injuring a teen standing nearby, who was hit by a stray bullet; three drug arrests, two burglaries, seven DWI arrests, a vandalism and eight automative crimes in the Greenbelt Police report from Aug. 24 to Aug. 29 Center City Aug. 24 at 12:05 a.m.: DUI/DWI Arrest. Kenilworth Avenue at Old Calvert Road. A Washington, DC man was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving while impaired by alcohol, among other charges after a traffic stop. The suspect was released on citations pending trial. At 5:44 p.m.: DUI/DWI Arrest. Unit block Laurel Hill Road. Police Release Photos of Suspect In Greenbelt Gunfight

A teenage girl was shot during a gunfight in Greenbelt East, now police prepare to offer a reward, police said.

  Police released two photographs Friday night of a suspect they say was allegedly involved in a Greenbelt gunfight Tuesday that left a teenage girl injured by a stray bullet, according to the Greenbelt Police Department. Greenbelt Gunfight Injures Young Bystander

A youth was injured by a stray bullet when a gunfight broke out in Greenbelt East, police said.

A gunfight between at least two people Tuesday afternoon resulted in an injury to a young bystander who apparently was struck by a stray bullet, Greenbelt Police said. Police said a youth was hit while walking home at about 6:23 p.m. The youth was treated in an area hospital and has been released, police said. One of the suspects is described as a black male, wearing tan shorts, no shirt and red and black sneakers. Police ask anyone with information to contact the Criminal Investigations Unit at (240) 542-2133. Police notified Patch about this Friday, although it happened Tuesday.
