Overall Crime Falls In Franklin Park but Burglaries Rise 48 Percent

New residents with higher incomes make Franklin Park a bigger target, according to Fieldstone spokesman. Chief Craze points out in other major crime categories there have been unfathomable drops.

A Fieldstone Properties representative speaking for Franklin Park told the Greenbelt City Council that Franklin Park has decimated crime. A main way they have done this is by evicting undesirable tenants, he said. Greenbelt police officer Tim White, the community police officer assigned to Franklin Park, helped management identify the undesirable tenants, Joe told City Council at its Monday work session. White said another way the police are working with management to reduce crime is by identifying and arresting trespassers. With regard to trespassing, White said, “There’s some reason the complex is like a magnet.”  White said, “They’ve got to be visiting somebody, friend, girlfriend, something, and we’re trying to address this issue by …

PHOTOS: Franklin Park Gets Groove On at Community Celebration

Residents and members of city agencies and services came together for an evening of fun.

As the Washington metro area enjoyed a refreshing respite from last week's heat wave, Franklin Park residents came together on July 14 for an evening midsummer celebration full of dancing, games and hot dogs and hamburgers fresh off a wood-fired grill. "I think it's a great idea to get the community together, especially from the different parts of Greenbelt," said Greenbelt Mayor Judith "J" Davis. Darren Stephenson, a family counselor for Greenbelt Cares, said that an advisory board for Franklin Park was recently formed to address the community and its needs. Stephenson joined forces with Greenbelt Cares Director, Dr. Liz Park, members of the City of Greenbelt, Franklin Park representatives, and the Greenbelt Police Department, including …

Viewfinder: Franklin Park's Community Police Officer Making a Difference

Officer Tim White patrols the property using a mountain bike, a golf cart and his trusty police car.

Greenbelt Police Department Officer Tim White patrols the 21 miles of sidewalks and 2,877 apartment units of the 153-acre multi-family property — the second largest east of the Mississippi River — known as Franklin Park at Greenbelt Station. Now managed by Fieldstone Properties, the community is slowly making it's way back from years of mismanagement, neglect and criminal decay. Debbie Dillon, executive vice president for Fieldstone Properties, said that when she arrived last summer from Dallas, Texas she witnessed something never experienced in her 30 years of managing multi-family properties. Vendors were knocking at the door wanting to get paid, 250 units needed to be evicted and 40 to 50 units were identified for criminal activity, …

UPDATE: It's Cooling Down at Franklin Park

At 1:12 a.m. Thursday, the temporary chiller started cooling units down at Franklin Park after a breakdown leaving 476 units with no air conditioning.

Update: June 2: Chief engineer John Philpott, along with his assistant and several contractors worked to get a temporary chiller cooling the air in the 476 units at Franklin Park. It started working at 1:12 a.m. Thursday, Debbie Dillon, executive vice president with Fieldstone Properties, said, "I've got a weary staff, but it's operational." Most people chose to stay in their units rather than go to the emergency cooling shelter across the street at Springhill Lake Elementary, Dillon said, adding they put one family up in a hotel, however, due to a complicated medical situation. Stating they had 80 employees dealing with 40 year old buildings and 100 service requests a day -- albeit greatly reduced from the 10,000 service requests …
