Alexander Emerges At Roosevelt

Raiders junior forward Malachi Alexander is one of the County's rising young stars.

Eleanor Roosevelt’s Malachi Alexander hasn’t played a full season of varsity basketball yet, but he’s already done enough to earn high praise from his coach. “He’s probably one of the top juniors around,” Raiders coach Brendan O’Connell said last week. “He’s got Division I interest, and he’s also a great kid.” Indeed, the 6-foot-6, 195-pound forward has emerged as one of the top young players in Prince George’s County despite his relative inexperience on the varsity level. “That makes me nervous, because that’s a lot of expectations from him,” Alexander said of O’Connell’s comments. “But I know I can do it. It just feels good that he believes in me, so I’ve just got to prove that I can be a Division I player.” Alexander played on the …

Former Eleanor Roosevelt Star Leads George Washington in Rebounds

Eleanor Roosevelt star Lasan Kromah leads his team in rebounds.

Mike Lonergan, who grew up on Traymore Lane in Bowie, inherited another Prince George's County product when he became the head men's basketball coach this season at George Washington (GW) University. Lasan Kromah, a graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt High in Greenbelt, is a 6-foot-5-inch guard for the GW Colonials. Kromah, who missed last season because of an injury, has started the first nine games and is averaging 9.5 points per contest but is making less than 34 percent of his shots from the field. "He is definitely struggling," Lonergan told Bowie Patch on Monday. "He is playing [a lot of] minutes. He is second on the team in shots (95). He is doing a good job of rebounding the ball. His shot selection has not been very good." Kromah leads …

Basketball: Roosevelt Begins Season on a Positive Note

The Raiders beat Oxon Hill in their regular season opener Tuesday night.

On the heels of two straight trips to the Class 4A state semifinals, Eleanor Roosevelt’s basketball took its first steps towards a third consecutive trip Tuesday night, cruising to a 68-55 win against visiting Oxon Hill in its regular season opener. The Raiders held a narrow 36-29 advantage at the end of the first half but pulled away behind the strong offensive play of Malachi Alexander (17 points), Jesse Ason (15 points) and Chaun Miller (14 points). Roosevelt led by as much as 16 during the second half and by no less than 11 points during any point of the fourth quarter. After losing its first game each of the previous two seasons, Raiders coach Brendan O’Connell said “it definitely feels good to start the season 1-0.” The Raiders fell …

Springhill Lake Recreation Center: Doorway of Champions

The champions of Springhill Lake Recreation Center are vying for gym space and hope the city buys the Greenbelt Middle School.

The Springhill Lake Recreation Center is undergoing a welcome renovation to make it fit for the champions that come through its doors — beginning with basketball and jump rope champions and ending with champions for life. Walking through the Center on Saturday afternoon, recreation coordinator Brian Butler discussed the new pavement and sidewalk outside the center's entrance, the new bathrooms, the office renovations underway, and the cleaned ceiling tiles. He said that a new entranceway will be added, and soon the gym — the heart of the Center — will be renovated, with the floor re-waxed, walls painted and ceiling tiles cleaned. The amount of effort the city is putting into the center excites Butler and the community, he said. Champions …

Labor Day Festival Hoop Heroics

Six Greenbelters, ages 9 to 28, win trophies at special 50th anniversary basketball tournaments.

A team of two Greenbelters—Amanda King, 21, and Douglas White, 28—won a basketball shooting tournament for those over the age of 12 at the Greenbelt Youth Center gym on Sunday afternoon, as part of the Labor Day Festival. In the under-12 division, four Greenbelt Boys and Girls Club players took all the trophies: The team of Jordan Valentine, 10, and Kadin Smith, 10, stood out for winning two different tournaments on Sunday; the team of Antoine Jacks, 9, and Isaiah Price, 11, won a tournament as well. Antoine's mother, Isha, was pleasantly surprised to learn from her son that the festival included a basketball tournament. Isha said she and her family come to the festival every year but this is the first time there was a tournament. "I'm …

Injury Turns Out to Be Blessing in Disguise for Former Roosevelt Basketball Player

Jamal Sims, a 2011 Eleanor Roosevelt graduate, will attend Florida A&M as a pre-dental major.

Jamal Sims couldn’t help but be frustrated. The Eleanor Roosevelt senior had prepared for much of the year leading up to a pivotal point last winter — to be the starting point guard and offensive catalyst for a Raiders basketball team he expected to help contend for Class 4A championship. Sims, who had already committed to play in college for Columbia University, was also eager to have a big year individually. Yet, just one game into the season, Sims’ hopes were quickly dashed, suffering what proved to be a season-ending torn ACL in his right knee during the fourth quarter Roosevelt’s season-opening loss to River Hill. So, rather than having a chance to fulfill his goals, Sims, who attempted an unsuccessful comeback in January, was forced …
