Bikers Compete in Greenbelt's Route 1 Velo Races
More than 100 bikers swarm Greenbelt Park on Wednesday evenings to compete in three different weekly races.
On a hot summer afternoon, over 100 bikers find their way to Greenbelt Park for the annual Route 1 Velo races. This 16-week long race series has been allowing riders in the Greenbelt area a chance to showcase their skills and meet other riders since its start in 1980. “We’re developing new riders and giving experienced riders a good workout.” said race promoter Jeff Travis. There are three separate sections of each week’s race: A-race for advanced riders, B-race for intermediate riders, and C-race for beginning riders. In addition, bikers are divided into at least four different categories based on their experience. Bikers can earn points in each race to upgrade their categories.
