Mayor announces her April 1 traffic stop by new Greenbelt police officer and supports police at the department's re-accreditation public hearing.
The Greenbelt Police Department's recent assessment process went fairly well, Greenbelt Police Lt. John Barrett said in an interview Thursday. Barrett, who served as accreditation manager noted that only two people showed up at the public hearing that was part of a national re-accreditation process for the department. But that was a good sign, according to Barrett. Having talked with accreditation managers in other municipalities, Barrett explained that the trend is "When you have problems, you get crowds." The Greenbelt Police Department is opening the floor for public comment as part of a voluntary assessment and accreditation process.
Greenbelt community members and agency employees are invited to offer comments during a Greenbelt Police Department public information session on April 2 at 6 p.m., police announced in a press release on Monday afternoon. The session will be conducted in the City of Greenbelt Council Chambers on the 2nd floor of the Municipal Building. Individuals who want to share remarks with the assessment team but cannot speak at the public session, may call (240) 542-2104 on April 2, between 1 and 3 p.m. to provide their comments. Telephone comments as well as remarks at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards. Greenbelt Elementary School will reopen Friday after passing final assessment.
Update, Aug. 25, 5:10 p.m.: Greenbelt Elementary School will reopen Friday after passing assessment. After earthquake-related tremors shook the area on Tuesday, an assessment was performed, and the school was closed through Thursday. Briant Coleman, a spokesperson for Prince George’s County Public Schools said, "We just had to double check a few cracks that we found. But they were not structural; they were cosmetic."
