Mom's Corner

Advice for a New Mom

Looking back on your life of parenting, what do you wish someone had told you? I wish I would have listen to that old lady in the grocery—it really does go by fast.

I had to stifle myself when I was at her house for a visit to meet the new little one. I wanted to shower her with my words of wisdom, an avalanche on her tired brain. I grew up in a family of girls; I’m the youngest of five…

Greenbelt Police Advise on How to Avoid Child Abduction Attempts

Capt. Thomas Kemp advises children and teens that "if something doesn't seem right, they should pick up on that instinct and not dismiss it."

That well-worn phrase your mother always repeated to you growing up—never talk to strangers—is key advice, when it comes to avoiding abduction. Greenbelt Capt. Thomas Kemp said that young people are savvy and "they should go with their instincts on not trusting strangers." Police continue to investigate a possible child abduction attempt after a man  allegedly tried to coax a 12-year old girl into his vehicle in the area of Springhill Drive and Edmonston Road Monday, Greenbelt Police Department said in a release. "The man, a number of times, repeatedly asked her to come over to the vehicle and she resisted," Kemp said on Thursday, when police released a photo of a white truck they say was in the area the time the incident occurred. …

First, let’s look at what may predict a positive future for you and yours. You should share some common interests. For me that included dating someone who shared my commitment to a vegan diet, loved cats (almost as much as me) and enjoyed my favorite TV show of all time — “Lost." When a guy enjoys my poetry and shows a genuine interest in my love of free verse, I know he gets me or is at least making the effort. Do they encourage your talents, build you up? Score! Next, if he makes me laugh, he’s all the closer to winning my heart. A guy’s looks are …

Could the Internet be Perfect Matchmaker?

This week Amy Headley begins a review of online dating services, focusing on her own colorful experiences with match.com

This week, I’m going to share some advice on internet dating, please learn from my mistakes, mostly the ones I made on: match Most singles at some point have used an internet dating service. Some of the popular stand-alone dating sites are plentyoffish, match and singlesnet. Social networking sites like Facebook are also starting to get into the matchmaking business. Online Personals Watch is filled with “statistics," or at least interesting theories, as well as links regarding internet dating. Here are two interesting things I learned: 70 percent of Canadian women on match.com declined to be matched with single dads. And there’s this: More than half of unmarried Americans are women. And for every 100 single women in America, there are 88 …
