Local students compete in a non-magical version of a sport made popular by the 'Harry Potter' book series.
By Ben Oldach, Capital News Service The University of Maryland, along with hundreds of other colleges across the world, has adopted a sport that comes straight from a storybook: Quidditch. Quidditch was played by hundreds of witches and wizards in the magical world created by J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series. But the sport has been played by non-magical students -- on the ground, not in the air -- since 2005, when the magical game was adapted to the real world by students at Middlebury College in Vermont who were looking for an alternative to bocce ball. “Muggle Quidditch,” as it is known, quickly spread across the world and has found a home at the University of Maryland. Former Prince George's County Police officer Thomas Jensen, who died in 2010 as a result of injuries sustained on duty, will be honored at a DeMatha hockey game against Calvert Hall High School today in Laurel. Jensen, a graduate of DeMatha's class of 2000, played varsity hockey at DeMatha and on the Prince George's County Fraternal Order of Police 89ers hockey team after he began working for the department in 2004. In March 2010, Jensen died after sustaining severe injuries to his head and neck during an auto wreck in College Park as he responded to a burglary in progress. The Washington Redskins team name was lambasted as “racist” and “demeaning” during a daylong symposium Thursday at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. The symposium, entitled “Racist Stereotypes and Cultural Appropriation in American Sports,” featured Native American activists, museum administrators and local journalists who discussed the impact of team names like the Redskins on Native Americans. “There is a very insidious quality...of viewing Native Americans as savages, as playthings,” said N.
