A Dozen Top Greenbelt Students Win ACE Awards

Students from six local schools honored by Greenbelt City Council.

Smiling young students stepped forward to accept their ACE Student Awards at Greenbelt City Council's most recent regular meeting. Council members congratulated them, while parents and friends applauded. It was the Advisory Committee on Education's (ACE) 18th annual student awards program. Ten of the twelve awardees were present to accept their awards, along with Eleanor Roosevelt High School student Charlotte Francoeur, who received a Maryland State Legislative Scholarship. Will Party-First Attitude Save or Spoil Preakness?

Four years after organizers failed to transform Maryland’s most famous race into a family-friendly event, the Preakness is stepping up efforts to preserve its self-proclaimed “best party in Baltimore” status. “We’ve always viewed [the Preakness] as the people’s race, the people’s party,” Maryland Jockey Club President and Chief Operating Officer Tom Chuckas said of the annual race scheduled for May 19. A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues," looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them." Ladies Night at Springhill Lake Recreation Center

Ladies get the gym to themselves on Thursday nights.

It's ladies night on Thursdays at the Springhill Lake Recreation Center from 7:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. You don't have to be a pro. Basketball players of all skill levels may shoot baskets, play a game, or simply watch. The only requirement is that you are a women who is 18 or over. It's also a good time to come out and watch the Lady Angels practice. Greenbelt Recreation Facility ID required, which can be purchased at Springhill Lake Recreation Center or at other recreation facilities in Greenbelt. Roosevelt Moves Up in State and National Rankings

Roosevelt High School boys' basketball team moved up six places in state rankings and up 285 nationally after Saturday's game.

On the heels of a 72-68 playoff victory over the Suitland Rams, Eleanor Roosevelt High School's boys' basketball team is up six places in the state rankings and 285 places in the national rankings as of Monday. Now Roosevelt's state ranking is 20 and its national rank is 1,134, according to MaxPreps rankings. And the team is number four in Maryland Division 4A rankings. On Saturday the Rams fought back to bring a 15-point lead down to a two possession game in the final minute. But Raiders senior guard Akil Charles put an end to that, netting two free throws with just over 16 seconds remaining, and the Raiders held the lead to win the game on their home floor, according to DMVelite's game coverage.
