Students from six local schools honored by Greenbelt City Council.
Smiling young students stepped forward to accept their ACE Student Awards at Greenbelt City Council's most recent regular meeting. Council members congratulated them, while parents and friends applauded. It was the Advisory Committee on Education's (ACE) 18th annual student awards program. Ten of the twelve awardees were present to accept their awards, along with Eleanor Roosevelt High School student Charlotte Francoeur, who received a Maryland State Legislative Scholarship. City Council will take up issues incluidng: a waiver for Parke Crescent Apartment, the location of the CSX Intermodal Facility, proposed improvements at Greenbelt Middle School and Springhill Lake Elementary.
Greenbelt City Council will hold a regular meeting Monday at 8 p.m. in the council room on the second floor of the Municipal Building. Council plans to take up the following presentations, reports, legislation and business, among other issues: Presentations Council Reports Committee Reports LEGISLATION A Resolution to Adopt the Maryland Municipal Public Works Officials’ Association (MMPWOA) Public Works Mutual Aid Agreement. Out of 21,776 public high schools, U.S. News says Roosevelt is 606 and gives it top ranking in the county.
Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, MD, tops the list for the highest-rated Prince George's County school in U.S. News and World Report 2012 rankings for best high schools, released Tuesday. The school ranks 23rd in the state—and that's out of 232 contenders. At the national level, Eleanor Roosevelt ranks 606 out of 21,776 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia. When evaluating schools, U.S. News and Wold Report, teaming up with American Institutes for Research, looked at student-to-teacher ratios, college readiness, algebra proficiency and English proficiency, among other factors. Students will head to the new middle school building this coming school year, but the future of the old building has not yet been decided. Greenbelters will get a chance to weigh in on the topic—and attend a festive celebration replete with mariachi, the Sity Stars, door prizes and more on Saturday. Kids, circle June 8. Draw stars around it. Make big plans for the day. The last day of school for students in Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) will be Friday, June 8. The last day for teachers will be Monday, June 11. Other employees scheduled to work a 10- or 11-month schedule should confirm their last day of work with their supervisors. Although all Prince George’s County schools were closed on Aug. 24 due to the earthquake and on Aug. 29 due to Hurricane Irene, make-up days were held on Oct. 21 and Feb. 13—both previously scheduled "off" days. Individual schools closed for additional days due to the earthquake or hurricane adjusted the length of their school day to make up instructional time.

Greenbelt will host a symposium on Friday and Saturday in the Greenbelt Community Center to celebrate Greenbelt’s 75th anniversary year. Academics from several universities, city staff and Greenbelt residents will look at the city’s legacies in terms of community planning, recreation, cooperative ventures and citizen activism. With a passion for public service and 13 years of experience with the Prince George’s County Public School system, running for a seat on the Board of Education seems to be a natural fit for Eleanor Roosevelt High School alumnus Raaheela Ahmed. Yet, Ahmed’s years of experience come not as being a teacher or a parent in the system, but as a former student.
