Roosevelt Going Back To States

Prince Okoroh scored 26 points to lead the Raiders to their second straight state semifinal berth.

senior forward Prince Okoroh’s name was called out over the speakers so often after he scored in Saturday’s game against C.H. Flowers that on two occasions the public address announcer failed to say it altogether, as if everyone in the building already knew.

Okoroh scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Raiders to a 51-30 win over Flowers in the 4A South Region title game at Wise High School, which earned them a berth in the state semifinals for the second consecutive season. Roosevelt was the state-runner up last year.

“From the jump, I just wanted to put my team on my back,” Okoroh said. “That’s what I went out to do.”

The Raiders (17-8) will play Baltimore’s Patterson High at the University of Maryland’s Comcast Center on Thursday.

Okoroh scored 18 of his points in the second half, and also grabbed nine rebounds. The 6-foot-4 Okoroh said after the game that he’s considering several colleges, including Brown, Columbia, Howard, Maryland-Baltimore County, Mount St. Mary’s, Loyola, Fordham and New Hampshire.

 “Prince was unbelievable,” Roosevelt coach Brendan O’Connell said. “I mean, he’s one of the best players in the state, and he showed it tonight.”

Sophomore center Malachi Alexander scored eight points for the Raiders, while senior guard NierRonn Miles added six. Senior guard Tyler Logan led C.H. Flowers (14-10) with nine points.

 “It just feels great,” Okoroh said. “It’s a big accomplishment, and it feels good to the Raiders Nation that we’re doing what we do best – just winning."
