Prince George's Girls Win by Narrow Margin in Varsity All-Star Matchup Against Montgomery

The Prince George's County girls' team beat out Montgomery County in the all-star basketball game Sunday in Upper Marlboro.

All Star contests aren’t exactly known to feature much defense, but Prince George’s County apparently didn’t get the memo.

The Prince George's County All Stars used their defensive pressure to key a fourth-quarter rally as they picked up a 66-64 victory over Montgomery County in the VOLiSports/FiOS 1 Girls All Star game at l in Upper Marlboro on Sunday.

“I think we basically won because of our defense,” center said. “We played really good defense: trapping, stealing the ball and we worked together and talked. Towards the end of the game it was a little iffy, but we came back.”

guard Jessica Lyons scored 12 points to lead the Prince George's squad, while C.H. Flowers guard Dominique Person added 10.

“In the beginning, everybody was trying to do their own thing,” Lyons said. “But then after we settled in, we started playing defense with pressure and then everything else came. Easy baskets came and shots were falling.”

Montgomery County center Gabby Flinchum (Wootton) led all scorers with 14 points.

Sunday’s game was the third edition of the VoliSports/FiOS 1 game, but the first time it featured Prince George's vs. Montgomery County. Players from both sides said the new format made for an even more compelling matchup.

“I think it did,” Lepzem said, “because there was a lot of competition on the floor, like, ‘Oh, my gosh, we can’t let PG win,’ but obviously, we won. But we just had fun with it. It’s nothing personal; it’s just a fun competition.”

Montgomery County jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game, but Prince George's rallied back to go ahead 13-12 after one quarter.

Flinchum opened the second quarter with a bucket to give Montgomery a lead, but Prince George's quickly regained it and went on to take a 27-24 lead at the break.

MoCo came out of the locker room clicking offensively, as its 27 third-quarter points were more than it had in the first half combined. They took a 51-46 lead into the final frame, but couldn’t hold on.

The PG squad forced nine Montgomery County turnovers to key their rally, and retook the lead on a lay-in by Surrattsville guard Rashawnda Carter with 4:49 remaining. They increased their advantage to as many as five points, but MoCo fought back to tie the game at 64-64 on a Flinchum bucket with 1:35 to go in the game.

Those were the last points Montgomery County would score, though, and Largo guard Jessica Lyons made two free throws to put Prince George's ahead for good with 1:19 to go.

“I tell you, it’s always a good feeling when you’ve got an opportunity to have 10 girls that can play,” said Prince Geroge's County coach Michael Strother of Gwynn Park. “And not only speaking about the best in Prince George’s County public schools. So, it was a lot of fun; I enjoyed myself.”
