Former Eleanor Roosevelt Star Leads George Washington in Rebounds

Eleanor Roosevelt star Lasan Kromah leads his team in rebounds.

Mike Lonergan, who grew up on Traymore Lane in Bowie, inherited another Prince George's County product when he became the head men's basketball coach this season at George Washington (GW) University.

Lasan Kromah, a graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt High in Greenbelt, is a 6-foot-5-inch guard for the GW Colonials.

Kromah, who missed last season because of an injury, has started the first nine games and is averaging 9.5 points per contest but is making less than 34 percent of his shots from the field.

"He is definitely struggling," Lonergan told Bowie Patch on Monday. "He is playing [a lot of] minutes. He is second on the team in shots (95). He is doing a good job of rebounding the ball. His shot selection has not been very good."

Kromah leads the team with 5.6 rebounds per game.

Senior guard Tony Taylor has taken the most shots (97) and leads the team in scoring at 13.1 points per game. Taylor has played a team-high 34.7 minutes per game while Kromah is averaging 27.1, the second-best mark on the team.

"We need to get Tony more shots," Lonergan said.

GW is now 4-5 overall after an 85-50 loss on Saturday at Big East power Syracuse, ranked No. 3 in the nation at the time. It was the fourth loss in a row for GW.

The Colonials host Bradley of the Missouri Valley Conference on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Foggy Bottom. Bradley was 12-20 last season and is picked to finish near the bottom of its league this year.

"We have a chance now to get our confidence back," Lonergan said, as his team begins a stretch of four home games in a row. Players need "a higher level of commitment if they want to have a good season this year. Even at our best we are not ready to beat Syracuse right now. I wish we could have played better on the road Saturday."

GW lost at home Dec. 7 to Loyola and head coach Jimmy Patsos, who was a teammate on the basketball team at Catholic University with good friend Lonergan. Both Lonergan and Patsos are former assistants under Gary Williams at University of Maryland.

Drummond Aids Loyola

Bowie resident Justin Drummond, who played basketball at Riverdale Baptist, came off the bench to score nine points for Loyola in a 65-54 win over Mount St. Mary's on Saturday. Drummond is a sophomore at Loyola.

Bowie State Hoops Wins

The Bowie State men's basketball team improved to 5-1 with an 80-69 win Dec. 8 against Pitt-Johnstown.

Jay Gavin had 26 points for host Bowie and Largo High graduate Darren Clark had 20 points and eight assists.
