Bikers Compete in Greenbelt's Route 1 Velo Races

More than 100 bikers swarm Greenbelt Park on Wednesday evenings to compete in three different weekly races.

On a hot summer afternoon, over 100 bikers find their way to Greenbelt Park for the annual Route 1 Velo races. This 16-week long race series has been allowing riders in the Greenbelt area a chance to showcase their skills and meet other riders since its start in 1980.

“We’re developing new riders and giving experienced riders a good workout.” said race promoter Jeff Travis.

There are three separate sections of each week’s race: A-race for advanced riders, B-race for intermediate riders, and C-race for beginning riders.  In addition, bikers are divided into at least four different categories based on their experience. Bikers can earn points in each race to upgrade their categories.

Each race starts and ends at the Holly Picnic Area of the park. Riders must complete a certain number of laps around a 1.4 mile course through the park. C-race riders must complete between 8 to 9 laps, B-racers must finish between 14 to 15 laps and A-racers must finish between 18 to 19 laps. But the length of the races doesn't discourage the more than 100 bikers who race each week.

“It’s a very satisfying experience” Travis said, “It’s like throwing a big party and having 100 people come”

Prizes are offered each week by College Park Carwash. At the end of the race series, cash prizes are awarded  to three winners.  Bagels and sustenance are also provided at each race for free by Bagel Place in College Park, an official sponsor of Route 1 Velo. Another race sponsor, Arrow Bicycle, provides on-site bike maintenance.

In order to participate, riders must have a racing license. One-day licenses are distributed near the racing site and are good for one race only. Riders must also register in advance to race.

The Route 1 Velo races emphasize training and endurance. However, participants still find the fun in racing.

“I love the competition,” said long-time rider Greg Nelson, “It’s fun to be out there and push yourself.”

“It’s a serious rush,” added another biker, “It’s as much fun as you can have legally.”

Route 1 Velo races take place on Wednesday evenings at Greenbelt Park through August 24, 2011.
