Summer Program Is Offering Free Lunches in Greenbelt

This summer, lunch is free for kids age 18 and under and for persons with disabilities, at two locations in Greenbelt.

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is offering children in Greenbelt, and throughout the state, healthy lunches during the summer, at no charge. It starts Monday, June 27, and runs through August 5, 2011.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture sponsors the program, which is available for all children age 18 and under, and it’s also available to people of all ages with mental or physical disabilities.

There are two locations offering free lunches, right here in Greenbelt, with lunch starting at 11:30 a.m. and ending at 1 p.m. They are:

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) helps administer the SFSP through a partnership with the county’s Department of Social Services. PGCPS said that although Maryland is the wealthiest state in the country, one in nine households face a constant struggle against hunger. It is concerned that students who receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year also get the nutrition they need to learn, play and grow during the summer.
