New Deputy Superintendent of Schools Has Prince George's Roots

A graduate of Bowie High School and Bowie State University, newly appointed deputy superintendent of schools Monique Whittington Davis has deep ties to Bowie and to Prince George’s County.

Davis brings more than 20 years of experience to her new position, serving most recently as regional assistant superintendent to Anne Arundel County Public Schools. Prior to that position, she served as an educator and an administrator in several Prince George’s County Schools, including Thomas Pullen Creative and Performing Arts School, Kettering Middle School, Glenarden Woods Elementary School, Robert Gray Elementary School and as principal at Henry G. Ferguson Elementary School.

“I am very pleased to have Dr. Davis join us,” PGCPS Chief Executive Officer Kevin M. Maxwell said in a statement. ”She brings a deep understanding of our school system and possesses the vision to move our students toward higher achievement.”  

According to a press release, Davis’ educational and administrative focus is on “raising student achievement and building capacity in her school teams.” Maryland School Assessment reading scores increased by 36.1 percent over a six-year period while Davis was serving as principal of Henry G. Ferguson Elementary .

Some of her innovative strategies included training staff to support each other through collaborative planning and peer observation, and engaging parents by hosting empowerment workshops, volunteer programs and “Parent Book Talks.”

Davis has an Ed.D. in educational administration and policy studies from The George Washington University, a master’s degree in elementary education from Bowie State University and earned her undergraduate degree in mass communications from Hampton University.
