Cracks in Greenbelt Elementary Assess as Cosmetic

Update, Aug. 25, 5:10 p.m.: Greenbelt Elementary School will reopen Friday after passing assessment.

After earthquake-related tremors shook the area on Tuesday, an assessment was performed, and the school was closed through Thursday.

Briant Coleman, a spokesperson for Prince George’s County Public Schools said, "We just had to double check a few cracks that we found. But they were not structural; they were cosmetic."

Original Post, 8:40 p.m.:In the wake of earthquake tremors that rocked Maryland on Tuesday, Prince George's County Executive Rushern L. Baker III has announced that 32 schools will remain closed Thursday, Aug. 25, as structural inspections continue.

is listed among the county schools that require further assessment and/or repairs.

In an earthquake update that Greenbelt Patch received from the Office of the County Executive at 7:55 p.m., Wednesday, Baker stated, “We are going to get displaced residents back in their buildings and students back in their classrooms as quickly as possible, but only after those buildings have been deemed safe and secure."
