Greenbelt Celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week

Patch says it's time to recognize our local teachers!

When I was in elementary school (my school went up to eighth grade), I had a mad crush on my PE teacher, an intense dislike for my first grade teacher, who by the way was nothing like The Flying Nun, and then there was Mr. Donovan. He was cooler than cool. He introduced me to amazing literature, Bob Dylan and poetry. I never told him how he "touched" my life — how he infused my soul and raised my consciousness.

Thankfully, I spent a number of years teaching in both a classroom and wilderness-based setting. I learned the importance of the student-teacher bond and what a gift it is to work with children and teenagers. And I especially loved all of the ways in which my students and their parents expressed their gratitude. I've kept all of their drawings, cards and handmade creations. They remind me of the generous and open spirit so prevalent in school communities around the country.

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, let us know what your child treasures about their teacher. Perhaps your son or daughter has a favorite teacher they'd like to thank. We'd love to hear your child's thoughts.
