Update: Former Roosevelt Star Bellamy on Being A Redskin

Travon Bellamy, a 2006 Eleanor Roosevelt High School graduate, who was a starting cornerback for the University of Illinois last season is now a Redskin.

Update, Dec. 5: Shortly after signing with the Washington Redskins last Tuesday, and thinking ahead to his first game with the team, Travon Bellamy found himself reminiscing about a job he held during middle school.

As a 13 year old, Bellamy sold food and drinks at a concession stand during Redskins home games at FedEx Field.

Sunday, he was back at the stadium working in a different capacity – on the sideline for Washington’s game against the New York Jets.

“To have come from working the concession stands at the Redskins’ stadium to now be on the field and playing for the Washington Redskins is just a dream come true,” Bellamy said. “It’s a crazy feeling.”

Bellamy, a defensive back, originally worked out for Washington Nov. 1.

The Greenbelt native and 2006 Eleanor Roosevelt High School graduate had previously spent this past training camp with the St. Louis Rams after finishing up a stellar career at the University of Illinois.

He was a defensive back for Illinois from 2006-10.

As a senior in 2010, he was a starting cornerback for 12 of the Fighting Illini’s 13 games and ranked third on the team with 70 tackles.

Now, he is hoping to eventually make a similar impact with the Redskins, and feels he is prepared to do so.

From the time he was released by the Rams in early August until being signed by Washington last week, Bellamy spent six days per week working out and training for his next NFL opportunity.

He lifted weights Monday through Friday, focusing on his upper body Monday, Wednesday and Friday — as well as his lower body Tuesday and Thursday. He ran on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays as well. He also used the StairMaster machine at the gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays to help with his cardiovascular endurance.

On Sundays, he would hit the field, going through positional drills under the guidance of former NFL Pro Bowler Troy Vincent and former Roosevelt assistant coach Roman Morris.

When asked how much he felt that preparation would help him with the Redskins, Bellamy responded, “I’m ready. I feel like I’m ready to come in and take advantage of this opportunity.”

He added, “I just worked really hard, and God really blessed me with this opportunity. I’m really excited, and I’m looking forward to going out and showing that I can play on the same field as the rest of these guys.”
