"Discovering the Solar System Through New Horizons" Planetarium Program

BACKGROUND:
The Howard B. Owens Science Center will host a planetarium program for parents, students and community members.

In our quest to identify and compare properties of celestial objects in our solar system, scientists have designed and built many satellites and spacecraft to explore these objects. Multiple missions have studied the eight classical planets. The “final frontier” of our solar system, Pluto and the Kuiper Belt Objects, will finally be reached in July 2015 when the New Horizons spacecraft reaches this destination.

While focusing specifically on this one mission, we will explore the process of scientific discovery made possible through technological advancements. As a result, we will develop our own conceptual “3-D” model of the solar system which considers the location and movement of all solar system objects.
