Eleanor Roosevelt Boys Hoops Is Off and Running

The Raiders will face a test Tuesday and Wednesday against Springbrook and Magruder in the Springbrook Holiday Tournament.

The Eleanor Roosevelt High School boys basketball team has high expectations for the 2011-2012 campaign.

The Raiders boast one of the tallest lineups in Prince George’s County and feature talented senior guard and four-year starter Chaun Miller.

The 6-foot-4 Miller has replaced the graduated Prince Okoroh as the Raiders’ primary offensive weapon and holds a Division I scholarship offer from Mount Saint Mary’s.

“He’s a shooter,” said Eleanor Roosevelt head coach Brendan O’Connell. “He’s a scorer. He’s a great leader [and] he’ll do anything we need.”

When Akil Charles went down with a broken elbow in a preseason scrimmage, Miller stepped in at point guard and has performed admirably ever since.

“That was a little bit of a blow to us early,” said O’Connell. “We’re hoping to get him back in mid-January.”

Among the team’s other contributors are juniors Trevor Evans and 6-foot-6 Malachi Alexander and seniors Shawn Petty and 6-foot-9 Enuoma Ebinum.

Miller and company have led the Raiders to five victories in their first six games including wins over Prince George's County powers such as Wise and Gwynn Park.

The Raiders will be tested before the new year when they play in the Springbrook Holiday Tournament against Montgomery County foes Springbrook and Magruder on Dec. 27 and 28.

“I know they’re both really good,” said O’Connell. “I know we’re going to have our hands full.”

Springbrook and Magruder are two of Montgomery County’s finest programs and boast four Maryland state titles between them in the past decade.

“We know we’re going to get better coming out of it,” said O’Connell. “That’s why we signed up for it.”
