Vacant Homes Still Plaguing Prince George's Neighborhoods

There are almost 2,000 vacant foreclosures in Prince George's County.

Hundreds of vacant foreclosed homes are still plaguing Prince George's County neighborhoods, the Washington Post reports.

Even with the housing market recovering in the county, there are still around 51,000 foreclosures in the county and around 1,900 of them are vacant, the paper writes.

According to the Post, officials are trying to deal with the problem by distributing funds to buy vacant foreclosures and by requiring banks to register foreclosed homes.

This is sad considering the number of home buyers that are in the market place. Of course, there are two problems, as I see it.
First, the homes are in such poor physical condition that they would require tens of thousands of dollars to repair and be made livable. Second, lending for this type of home - needing the extensive rehab - is tighter than lending for "regular" homes. Unfortunately, home buyers that might fix up these places can't get the rehab loan or FHA 203(k). Result: they sit and continue to add to neighborhood blight.

If the banks would move the inventory faster there would not be as many vacant! There also would not be the thefts of copper etc.!

The banks do not want the houses because there are so many of them. And the value of the houses are much less than the mortgage owed. Still some people want to remain in their homes because they signed a contract.

Do you see vacant homes in your community? Are they an eyesore?

I agree with ken, i just think that these ran down houses should be knocked down and rebuilt. Some of them anyway because of the cost to fix them will probably cost the price of a fully demo and remodeled house./new house. I believe them boiler/hydronic/radiator systems in houses should be done away with also.

Considering the sorry state of sex education in schools today and parental reluctance for teachingRead More anything but abstinence (if they teach anything at all), I'd suggest that the sale shouldn't even be questioned. When we decide education means more than just saying "no," when boys and men learn that it's as much their responsibility as women's to avoid unprotected sex and that violence against women is wrong, and when we teach consequences along with abstinence, then perhaps the pill won't be necessary. I don't see that day coming for a long, long time. Now, if the course "Our Whole Lives" taught by Unitarian Universalists became standard education in every school, perhaps we wouldn't need emergency contraception. Education (knowledge) is power.

Betsy, I agree with a lot of your post; many parents seem to feel that if they tell their childrenRead More about sex, it's the same as telling them to go out and do it. I'm willing to bet that more young people get into trouble by ignorance than by knowledge. (and I haven't read the text that you mentioned but yes, education/knowledge IS power).

By all means, give them the pill and let them stop trouble in its tracks. From that moment forward,Read More encourage them to find safer ways to have fun.
