NASA Goddard Shows 'Surfer' Waves on the Sun

Greenbelt's NASA/Goddard's Solar Dynamics Observatory catches "surfer" waves on the sun—in visuals.

Leon Ofman, solar physicist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and his Goddard colleague, Barbara Thompson, spotted sun waves in images caught on camera by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), a solar telescope with extremely high resolution that launched on February 11, 2010, and began capturing data the following month. The team's results went online this May and will be published in Astrophysical Journal Letters on June 10.  You can take a peek at the images now, compliments of NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center.
