Mang Family Dismisses Lawsuit Against City and Police

The family will file a case against the hospital, however, according to their attorney.

Michael Mang's family dismissed without prejudice , according to family's attorney J.P. Szymkowicz.

Mang's mother Lynda Sheppard and sister Blanche Mang filed a $10 million lawsuit in July 2011. They believed the police officers' treatment of Mang on the morning of his May 26, 2010 arrest led to his death in police custody. Police transported Mang to Doctors Community Hospital where he complained of chest pain; he was evaluated but discharged from the hospital. He later died in a holding cell in the Greenbelt Police Department.

The case was dropped on Feb. 15, according to a story in the Greenbelt News Review.

"The wrongful death civil suit brought against our police officers was frivolous and totally without merit as was proved by the Maryland State Police investigation and the review of the case by the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office," Chief James Craze told the Greenbelt News Review.

Chief Craze also expressed condolences on behalf of the city to Mang's family for his dying from natural causes, according to the News Review.

The family, however, still plans to file a case against the Doctor’s Community Hospital, Szymkowicz told Patch.

Szymkowicz said he could not say when the case would be filed in court because it must first go through a Maryland health claims arbitration panel.
