Greenbelt Police Gain Statewide Recognition for Traffic Enforcement

Competition is tight for the Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge Award, according to a state police chief, who says Greenbelt officers' efforts prevent death on roadways.

Three law enforcement agencies have chosen the as a runner up for a prestigious Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge Award, according to a Greenbelt Police press release.

“I want to congratulate the officers of the Greenbelt Police Department for their commitment to the Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge," said Chief William J. McMahon, Maryland Chiefs of Police Association president.

"Competition for these awards is very tight every year, and the efforts of the department have been key to preventing crashes and the resulting injuries and deaths on our roadways," McMahon added.

Greenbelt is a runner up in the category of municipal departments with 46-99 officers, officer Kelly Lawson said Thursday.

The competition is sponsored by the Maryland Chiefs of Police Association, the Maryland Sheriff's Association and the Maryland Highway Safety Office. Winners are recognized in June, according to Lawson.

The award recognizes and rewards the best overall traffic enforcement programs in the Maryland. A panel of judges from the law enforcement or public safety community determines the winners based on programs that combine officer training, public information and enforcement to reduce crashes and injuries within its jurisdiction, according to a news release.
