Greenbelt Day Weekend 2012 – Your Guide to Events and Activities

Greenbelt is celebrating its 75th Anniversary with events all over town.

Founded in 1937 as the first community in the United States built as a federal venture in housing, Greenbelt is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this weekend with a series of athletic, educational, artistic and civic events.

Friday, June 1

  • The is open from 6:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. with the outdoor pool open from 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
  • Greenbelt Baseball features a triple-header: Orioles v Giants at 6:00 p.m. (Braden Field #2); Indians v A’s, 6:00 p.m. (McDonald Field) and Parents v Coaches, 8:00 p.m. (Braden Field #2)

Saturday, June 2

  • The opens at 8:00 a.m., with swim lesson pre-evaluations from 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. and the outdoor pool is open from 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
  • Greenbelt Tennis Association Singles Tournament – The first singles tournament of the year kicks off at 8:00 a.m. at the tennis courts.
  • The Greenbelt Recreation Department’s Youth Sprint Triathlon starts at 9:30 p.m. the . The race is open to kids aged 8-15 and there is a $10 registration fee. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.
  • “Not for Seniors Only” is an open forum session from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. in Room 201 at the .
  • The 75th Anniversary Dinner Dance Gala at Martin’s Crosswinds will run from 7:30 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. with Peaches O’Dell and her orchestra and a cash bar. Visit the city’s website for ticket information.

Sunday, June 3

  • See the city’s finest ball players compete during the Greenbelt All-Star Game at McDonald Field at 1 p.m.
  • Witness the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Service administer the Oath of Allegiance to U.S. citizenship candidates at 1 p.m. at the .
  • Stop by the for Artful Afternoon, a series of craft, musical, exhibit and other artistic events from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • The will host four special performances of Hometown Heroes: 75 Years of Extraordinary Greenbelt Women by the Alight Dance Theatre at 1:00 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Limited tickets are available for $3.
