NASA Goddard Scientist Spies Activity on New Red Sea Island
The new island in the southern Red Sea does not appear to be finished, according to NASA Goddard scientist Jeffrey Schmaltz.
It appears there is some island building still going on at the near Rugged Island in the southern Red Sea — and the island could get bigger — according to Jeffrey Schmaltz, a NASA Goddard senior support scientist who analyzes satellite data.
"It looks like something is still going on there," Schmaltz said.
Schmaltz has been examining satellite images of the new island for several weeks now, including the latest image from Monday morning at 5:35 a.m. EST (10:35 UTC) captured by the Moderate Resolution Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument that flies aboard NASA's Aqua satellite.

This image shows a small white dot that Schmaltz has been analyzing. He can't be certain yet, but is pretty sure what he is seeing is a plume, and it's something venting into the atmosphere, he said.
