GHI Annual Meeting and Elections Preview

GHI members will gather tonight for their annual meeting to elect new Board of Directors members and discuss pressing issues.

It's time again for (GHI) annual membership meeting tonight, May 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Greenbelt Community Center gymnasium, with the doors open for registration at 7 p.m.

"It's going to be very, very informative, what with the upgrades that they're planning on putting forth," Joan Krob, Director of GHI Member Services said, in reference to the Buildings Committee pilot program.

GHI members will elect representatives to the Board of Directors and Audit Committee members immediately following the recess of the annual meeting, with five open seats for the Board and three for the Audit Committee, with the exact number of candidates as there are open seats for both groups, according to Krob.

  • An amendment to determine whether two members from the same unit can hold elected offices.

  • An amendment to increase the days in segments of the election period.

  • An amendment to change voting from a plurality to a majority system, putting an end to the possibility of candidates winning simply because no more candidates ran than the number of seats that were open. If the amendment passes, the majority-elected Board members will choose the new Board members for any open seats where majorities were not achieved.

  • But amendments are not engraved in stone, "All of that can change depending on actions on the floor," Krob said, because members can offer amendments to amendments, table them altogether or pass them.

Other agenda items and activities include:

    • A review of the past year.
    • A members' petition to automatically increase Board of Directors' compensation by $20 and Audit Committee members by $10 every five years.
    • The Woodlands Committee's annual free plant giveaway.
    • Information and booths from various GHI task forces and committees on companion animals, the new GHI website, a survey from The Communicator, and the Buildings Committee upgrade.
    • Door prizes.
