City Council Meeting Will Discuss Parkway Widening

Tonight's city council meeting will provide more information on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway expansion.

After quite a long break, Greenbelt's city council meets Monday to discuss some serious business.

There have been recent murmurings on the Greenbelters listserv and elsewhere about the widening of the Balitimore-Washington Parkway. Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger  (D) successfully requested $1 million to fund the FY10 Omnibus Appropriations bill for the Interstate 295/ Baltimore-Washington Parkway Widening study. The study is meant to address congestion issues in the Baltimore-Washington region by adding a third northbound lane and a third southbound lane for the parkway from Interstate 695 to New York Avenue. The council will be discussing this issue at the meeting.

Other points on the agenda include the second reading and adoption of the purchase of the Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon for safe crossing at the Crescent Road and St. Hugh's crosswalk. There will also be discussion on what to do about an earlier discussion of obtaining funds currently used to provide TheBus service in Greenbelt to operate a municipal bus system on their own.
