Two Greenbelt Call Boxes Are Reported Running

The Springhill Lake Elementary and Metro Access Drive call boxes are reported to be active in Greenbelt with Springhill Lake Recreation Center's left to go.

Two of the three new Greenbelt call boxes, designed to speedily notify police when help is needed, now have their power and phone connections, David Moran, assistant city manager, reported Wednesday. He hopes all three will be up and running by Friday.

Moran said the city’s information technology director, Dale Worley, has reported that the boxes on Metro Access Drive and near Springhill Lake Elementary are not only connected but working. The Springhill Lake Recreation Center box, however, has a step to go, which is scheduled for Friday, he said, adding, “We’re very, very close.”

Greenbelt Police Department officer Tim White happened to be nearby the Springhill Elementary School box at about 5 p.m. Wednesday at the same time Patch was taking photos. When asked about its working status, he answered by testing the box. Seconds after pressing the help button, his call went through and was received and answered on the other end.

If all goes according to plan on Friday, all three boxes may be up and running soon, Moran stated.
