Public Invited to Be Part of Greenbelt Police Assessment

The Greenbelt Police Department is opening the floor for public comment as part of a voluntary assessment and accreditation process.

Greenbelt community members and agency employees are invited to offer comments during a Greenbelt Police Department public information session on April 2 at 6 p.m., police announced in a press release on Monday afternoon.

The session will be conducted in the City of Greenbelt Council Chambers on the 2nd floor of the .

Individuals who want to share remarks with the assessment team but cannot speak at the public session, may call (240) 542-2104 on April 2, between 1 and 3 p.m. to provide their comments.

Telephone comments as well as remarks at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards. A copy of the standards is available at the . Police ask that interested parties please contact Lt. Barrett (240) 542-2104.

The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) Inc. will arrive on March 31 to examine the department's policy and procedures, management, operations and support services. This is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation, and the public meeting is part of its on-site assessment.

Verification by the team that the department meets the commission's state-of-the-art standards is is a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence, Greenbelt police stated.

The Greenbelt Police Department must comply with all applicable standards to gain accredited status, according to police.

Accreditation lasts for three years, during which time the agency must submit annual reports, attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited, according to police.
