Man Critically Injured in Laurel Moped Crash

The man in his 20s was critically injured as he tried to cross Route 197.

A man is in critical condition after his moped hit a car in Laurel, Prince George's County Police Lt. Bill Alexander reported Monday.

The Sunday night accident occurred around 10:45 p.m. off Route 197 at Muirkirk Road, Alexander said.

According to a preliminary investigation, the driver -- between the age of 20 and 22 -- was riding his moped across 197 when he failed to stop at a red light and crashed into a Hyundai which had a green signal, Alexander said.

Police said the driver of the Hyundai was not at fault and that alcohol and speed were not factors in the crash.

As of 4 a.m. Monday, the man remained in critical but stable condition at a local area hospital.
