Greenbelt Man Involved in Crash on Route 50

The initial investigation indicates alcohol contributed to the crash.

At approximately 4:29 a.m., Anne Arundel County police officers from the Eastern District responded to a serious traffic accident on Route 50 West and extricated two males drivers who sustained possible life-threatening injuries, according to Anne Arundel County police spokesman Glenn Shanahan.

The initial investigation revealed that Ryan Christoper John, 24, of 73 Ridge Road in Greenbelt, was driving a 2007 Honda Civic, traveling east in the westbound lanes of Route 50 West, Shanahan said. Just east of the overpass for Bay Dale Drive, John's vehicle struck a black 2005 Kia driven by Michael Dickinson Gurd, 23, that was traveling westbound on Route 50 West in the middle lane, he said.

Both men were transported by helicopter to the University of Maryland Medical Center, Shock Trauma Unit, police said. Gurd is listed in serious condition; John was treated and later released.
