Greenbelt Fire Kills One, Injures Two Others

The fire broke out in a home on Laurel Hill Road in Greenbelt Friday night.

Three people were injured—one fatally— when a fire broke out in a two-story townhome on Laurel Hill Road in Greenbelt Friday night.

Firefighters responded to the scene just before 9 p.m., according to Prince George's County Fire/EMS Spokesman Mark Brady. When they arrived, the fire was burning from the middle of a row of townhomes, Brady said, with flames showing from the front and rear sides of the home. Two residents escaped before the firefighters arrived, but a third person was still trapped inside.

The firefighters ran inside to extinguish the flames and search for the woman, he said, but within 15 minutes the fire spread to the second floor and almost to the attic, before they could snuff out the flames.

An elderly woman was removed from the home by firefighters during search and rescue efforts, Brady said, however she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Paramedics did treat the other occupants—a man and woman—who had serious but not life threatening injuries, he added. Brady did not know if the occupants were related.

Two other townhouses sustained fire damage, displacing their occupants—three adults and two children, he added.

According to Brady, the cause of the fire is still under investigation, and damages have not been calculated. The identify of the deceased woman was also not released.
