Firefighter Declares Mayday, Man Rescued in Greenbelt Fire Wednesday

The fire began around 4:30 p.m. in the 9100 block of Edmonston Terrace in Greenbelt.

It took Prince George's County firefighters 30 minutes to battle a large fire Wednesday afternoon in Franklin Park apartments.

According to Prince George's County Fire/EMS Spokesman Mark Brady, firefighters reported to the scene of the two-floor apartment fire in the 9100 block of Edmonston Terrace around 4:30 p.m.

A video attached to this post shows the extent of the fire.

When the firefighters arrived, they had to rescue a man from his apartment using a ladder. At the time, the fire was burning on the front side of the two-story garden style apartments, Brady said. The man was not injured.

A second alarm was sounded, bringing about 50 firefighters and medics to the scene, but Brady said the fire spread to the roof and the rescuers were evacuated.

Firefighters extinguished the bulk of the flames from outside before returning indoors to complete the job, he reported.

Although one firefighter declared a mayday after he was separated from his crew, the firefighter was immediately found and was not injured, Brady said.

Twenty families in the building where the fire originated were displaced, he added, although no injuries were reported.

Brady said the fire was accidental and attributed to a malfunctioning furnace. Damage is estimated at $250,000.

Editor's Note: This story has been corrected. An earlier version called the apartment complex by it's previous name.

Please try to get the name of apartment complex corrected.AIMCO sold Springhill Lakes several years ago after an unsuccessful attempt to get permission to do a massive redevelopment of the complex. There have been several fires over the years and crime continues to dominate the complex. Greenbelt would have been better off with the AIMCO plan that what it has now.

The complex is now called Franklin Park. People still call it Springhill Lake because it is the most familiar name. Even I call it that when I go visit my son and his family. It may have been better with the AIMCO plan, but the crime has been shifting back and forth for years now. Maybe the people who live there can come up with a new plan that works. Not sure if it would alleviate the crime though, but maybe it can reduce it more substantially.

Considering the sorry state of sex education in schools today and parental reluctance for teachingRead More anything but abstinence (if they teach anything at all), I'd suggest that the sale shouldn't even be questioned. When we decide education means more than just saying "no," when boys and men learn that it's as much their responsibility as women's to avoid unprotected sex and that violence against women is wrong, and when we teach consequences along with abstinence, then perhaps the pill won't be necessary. I don't see that day coming for a long, long time. Now, if the course "Our Whole Lives" taught by Unitarian Universalists became standard education in every school, perhaps we wouldn't need emergency contraception. Education (knowledge) is power.

Betsy, I agree with a lot of your post; many parents seem to feel that if they tell their childrenRead More about sex, it's the same as telling them to go out and do it. I'm willing to bet that more young people get into trouble by ignorance than by knowledge. (and I haven't read the text that you mentioned but yes, education/knowledge IS power).

By all means, give them the pill and let them stop trouble in its tracks. From that moment forward,Read More encourage them to find safer ways to have fun.
