Fallen Sheriff's Deputies to be Honored in Wreath-laying Ceremony

New Memorial remembers Sergeant James Arnaud and Deputy First Class Elizabeth Magruder.

A memorial ceremony will be held Wednesday outside the Prince George's County Sheriff's office marking the 10th anniversary of the deaths of Sergeant James Arnaud and Deputy First Class Elizabeth Magruder.

Arnaud and Magruder were killed in August, 2002, while attempting to serve an emergency psychiatric service (EPS) petition to a man at a home in Adelphi. The man shot both offficers. The killings were the first line-of-duty deaths in the Prince George's Sheriff's department's 306-year history.

The wreath-laying will be the first held at the newly-completed Memorial Monument on the grounds of the Sheriff's Office headquarters in Upper Marlboro. Family members and colleagues of both officers will participate. Other family, friends and colleagues are welcome to attend the service.

An official dedication of the new Memorial Monument is scheduled for next May during national Police Week.

The Memorial & Dedication Ceremony for Sgt. Arnaud and DFC Magruder begins at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 29, on the grounds of the Prince George’s County Sheriff's Office, 5303 Chrysler Way in Upper Marlboro.
