Solar Power System Draws in 900 Plus Kilowatts for Greenbelt Baptist

Church Trustee Ron England said Greenbelt Baptist's new solar power generation system has drawn in more than 900 kilowatts and counting.

Since a meter was installed around three weeks ago, the new solar PV generating system on the roof of has pulled in 900 plus kilowatts, church Trustee Ron England reported.

Although the solar generating system became operational on Dec. 29, the meter was installed afterward, he explained.

Greenbelt Community Solar is celebrating the completion of the new solar power generation plant, installed by Astrum Solar, with a public commissioning event on Saturday at 2 p.m.

"I think it's terrific," church secretary Carolyn Hammett said. She's heard reports that it will save the church money and plans to attend the commissioning ceremony to hear more about it.

Greenbelt Community Solar hopes to replace some of the electricity generated from fossil fuels and at the same time lower Greenbelt’s carbon footprint, according to its website.

The commissioning will be held in the Greenbelt Baptist Church sanctuary because event organizers considered it too cold to hold outside. So attendees will get to enjoy first-hand the results of the new generating system.
