Greenbelt's First Holiday Market Set to Take Off

Sunday will bring with it a holiday market full of seasonal specials — even Christmas trees and eggnog ice cream.

Greenbelt's first-ever holiday market is this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot.

Along with the local veggies, like winter squash, cabbage, broccoli and sweet potatoes, plus the meats and eggs offered during the markets' regular season — holiday fare will be on hand.

Simple Pleasures Ice Cafe will be offering eggnog and chocolate peppermint ice cream and Pat Hochmuth farms will have painted Santa and snowman gourds on hand.

If you're still looking for the perfect tree, Patty's Garden plans to offer Christmas trees from Nichols' Tree Farm, including Norway Spruce, blue spruce, white fir, Fraser Fir, white pine and Douglas-fir. It will also offer “candy canes" made with heirloom tomato vine bases.

Poinsettias, wreaths and greenery for holiday arrangements can also be found if you stop by Thanksgiving Farms.

And, yes, there will be coffee. Those who can only face the season highly caffeinated can stop by Zeke's Coffee, which will be brewing its 2011 holiday roast and selling coffee by the pound. And those who just like coffee can stop by as well.

While picking up veggies, greenery and other goodies, shoppers can also enjoy and join in on holiday caroling.

A number of vendors have confirmed their participation. If you don't see your favorite vendor in the list, you can go to the Greenbelt Farmers Market website. The market is adding vendors as they confirm and also lists items vendors are planning to bring.
