Bike to Work Day and Rivers to Rockets Ride

Great rides coming up this weekend; Video from Bike DC 2012

Bike to Work Day, Friday May 18

This year, Greenbelt is hosting a Bike to Work Day pitstop at the Aquatic and Fitness Center, starting at 6:30 a.m. The official guided Greenbelt Convoy to DC leaves from the fitness center at 6:30 a.m. and makes a stop in at the College Park pitstop before heading to DC.

This year, there's also an unofficial meetup at 7:30 a.m. for DC commuters. We'll take a similar route to the Greenbelt Convoy, but we won't stop in College Park. However, we'll be going through the Wells Ice Rink parking lot (next to the NE Branch trail) to pick up anyone who wants to join us at about 8 a.m. Here is a link to the route we're taking for the 7:30 a.m. meetup: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1103154

You have to sign up at the official website to get your t-shirt http://www.biketoworkmetrodc.org/, and there's lots more information there on pitstops, convoys etc. College Park Patch has with additional helpful links.

Rivers to Rockets Ride, Saturday May 19

The Anacostia Trails Heritage Area is hosting a "rivers to rockets" bike ride from the Bladensburg marina to Greenbelt this Saturday. This might be a fun family ride for people wishing to explore the Anacostia Tributary Trails.

The ride starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Bladensburg Marina—it goes along the NE branch trail (mostly) to Greenbelt and back.

All are welcome to join us as we "ride to the ride" from Greenbelt/College Park. We will leave Greenbelt (New Deal Café) at about 7:45 a.m., go past Lake Artemesia parking lot at about 8 a.m., the Wells Ice Rink parking lot at about 8:10 a.m. and get to the ride start at the marina by the start time of 8:30 a.m. (just in time to turn around and head back to Greenbelt, probably). The ride to Bladensburg from Greenbelt is about 7 or 8 miles, I think, mostly flat.

There is a fee for the ride, but I think they're providing food.

The attached video gives a flavor for the big Bike DC 2012 fundraiser ride last Sunday. They closed the highways and parkways for the ride, and thousands of cyclists turned out. Enjoy!
