Astronomical Society of Greenbelt Celebrates '75 Years of Stars'

This Thursday, the Astronomical Society of Greenbelt participates in Greenbelt's 75th Anniversary with "75 years of stars," a look back at both amateur and professional astronomy in 1937 and since. Amateur and professional astronomers will talk about important events.

Planetarian Russell Waugh will show us some interesting stars that are 75 light years away, whose light left them when the original Greenbelters moved in to their new homes. As a conclusion, you'll get a surprising look at how Greenbelters related to the night sky and to science in that year long ago.

Two important personalities will be highlighted: Dr. Robert Goddard, after whom the Goddard Space Flight Center is named, and Dr. Howard B. Owens, for which the Owens Science Center is named. The 75th Anniversary Committee will be selling souvenirs and astronomical calendars by the door.

The Howard B. Owens Science Center is east of Greenbelt on 193 just past IceSat Road; turn right at the second or third turn. The second turn has a sign showing what looks like a ship's steering wheel. The Center is a major science resource of the Prince George's Public Schools, and is open to all.
