Sexism, Violence, and Geekdom Training

What is Geek Culture?

While varied and diverse, geek culture is mostly about a dedication to the truly fantastic. What was once a term of ridicule has now become a term of solidarity as the culture has grown and evolved over the years. While the focus of this training will be on those who are passionate about video games, science fiction, fantasy, and heroes, keep in mind there are music geeks, sports geeks, even fashion geeks who make up this massive community. What we are seeking to do is to tap into these passions and use them to find new and innovative ways of connecting with those we serve.

What Will You Learn?

During this training we will examine various aspects of geek culture to discuss the broad implications of sexism, racism, misogyny, and homophobia. You will —

  • gain a deeper understanding of the social implications of geek culture
  • learn to use geek culture as a teaching tool
  • learn about the constantly evolving trends (both positive and negative) within geek culture

Why Examine Geek Culture?

Over the past few decades geek culture has grown at an exponential rate. Four out of the five top grossing films of all time are science fiction, fantasy, or superhero movies.  Game of Thrones has become the most popular HBO show of all time, and The Avengers broke nearly every record in the book on their way to becoming the fastest film to gross $1 billion at the box office.

In short, geek culture is expanding and affecting more people than it ever has before. As this phenomenon reaches more people it is important to be able to understand the benefits and drawbacks. Used as a teaching tool geek culture can help us to examine the broader implications of American culture as a whole.
