Week in Review: Green Man Festival, Video Series With County Executive and Farm to Table
A look back on the week's news for May 8-14.
Moms are marvelous was the sentiment last Sunday as we reported on a special event for moms at Greenbelt Elementary School. Sunday was Mother's Day and the season opener for the Greenbelt Farmers Market, as well as the second day of the Green Man Festival.
Attendees at the 7th annual Green Man Festival enjoyed music, environment-themed demonstrations, crafts and a bit of fairy dust during the two-day festival. Highlights included the Green Men blessing the festival's vendors (video) and Lesley Riddle, Public Works employee, was given the Green Man Award for assisting a local environmental group to create three gardens that demonstrate organic growth.
On Sunday, Patch also reported on conversations with three of Greenbelt's Christian leaders about Osama bin Laden's death — their personal reflections as well as those of their congregations.

On Monday, we began a video series on Prince George's County Executive Rushern L. Baker's transition to office. He spoke about development in the county and pay raises for county employees.
Patch reported on the current production at the Greenbelt Art Center, "The Burial at Thebes." A contemporary adaptation of Sophocles’ Greek tragedy "Antigone," the play continues through May 21.

Monday's Greenbelt City Council meeting Monday evening drew state delegates with an update of the recent legislative session. WMATA representatives presented the council with plans to lay 10,000 feet of test track between the Greenbelt Maintenance Yard and College Park Airport. Prior to the meeting, Greenbelt’s Advisory Committee on Education honored 13 college-bound kids with ACE awards.
Exciting business news happened in Greenbelt this week: Angel’s Touch, a skin care and wellness center, opened May 1, and Joe's Crab Shack is set to open in late May.
Patch continued its series on the Greenbelt Farmers Market with a story on one of it's vendors, Gunpowder Bison & Trading Co. in Monkton, Md., and our weekly Viewfinder feature highlights three of the market's vendors — Calvert Farm, Gunpowder Bison and Shlagel Farms.
On Thursday, we featured Whiz Kid, Peace Gwam — a senior at Eleanor Roosevelt High School who was a double winner in the Prince George’s County Public Schools' first Scholastic Olympics.
We ended the week with our movie review series with high marks by Councilman Konrad Herling, Sheila Maffay-Tuthill and Bailey Henneberg for “The Conspirator,” now playing at the Old Greenbelt Theatre.
Oh, and did you know that the Greenbelt Boys and Girls Club is offering track and field for kids from five to 18? The club is accepting reservations through May 28.
