UPDATE: Severe Thunderstorn Warning, Tornado Watch Issued for Prince George's County

Residents are urged to seek safe shelter indoors until the storm passes and to remain alert for any additional warnings.

Update, 8:00 p.m.: The SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING for Prince George's County is in effect through 8:30 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

The TORNADO WATCH is in effect until 9 p.m.

Update, 5:00 p.m.: A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING has been issued for Prince George's County by the National Weather Service.

Doppler radar indicates a line of severe thunderstorms with a history of producing damaging winds is moving from the west. These storms will affect a majority of the county over the next hour. Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes with little or no advanced warning.

Original post:TORNADO WATCH has been issued for Prince George's County effective immediately, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Storms have formed west of the D.C. metro this afternoon; some of these storms are approaching severe levels. Atmospheric conditions are favorable for tornadic development.

NWS Safety Tips:

  • Be prepared. Tornadoes can form from severe thunderstorms with little or no advanced warning.
  • Know your safe room in your home, at school and at work.
  • If driving and a tornado is spotted, leave your car immediately and move to shelter or a low lying area. Do not use highway overpasses as shelters.
  • Remain alert for the issuance of warnings.
