Update: Tornadoes and Flash Floods Threaten Prince George's

Update, 5:35 p.m.: Following severe thunderstorms that charged through the area Tuesday and a tornado warning that expired at 3:45 p.m., the National Weather Service (NWS) put Prince George's County under a tornado watch until 7 p.m.

A flash flood watch also continues for areas near the I-95 corridor until 8 p.m., according to NWS.

As of 5 p.m., BGE said it had restored service to nearly 7,000 customers affected by the first few rounds of storms, which brought high wind, heavy rain and lightning. The company expects to continue to see outage numbers increase as additional severe weather and storms continue to move through its service area this evening and into early Wednesday.

Update: 3:35 p.m. A tornado warning remains in effect until 3:45 p.m. for Prince George's County, according to the National Weather Service.

A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was near Langley Park and moving northeast at 55 miles per hour at 3:18 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Update: 11:52 a.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Prince George's County and much of the area until 7 p.m.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected in Prince George's County Tuesday, along and ahead of a cold front. Some of the thunderstorms may become severe and produce damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Periods of heavy downpours are also expected, which could lead to localized flash flooding.

The severe weather is likely to run from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., NWS says.

Tuesday evening, patchy fog is expected along with showers and a chance of thunderstorms.

Highs are expected to be in the upper 70s during the day with the chance of rain near 100 percent. Lows in the upper 50s are expected at night with the chance of rain near 100 percent.

A small craft advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. and a gale warning is in effect for the waters late this morning and afternoon. Gale conditions are expected to continue in the evening, according to NWS.

A coastal flood watch has been issued for the lower tidal Potomac River, where moderate flooding this afternoon and tonight is possible, NWS says.
