Swinging Singles

Check out some creative and entertaining ways singles can have some fun!

Are you burned out by the dating websites, bar scenes and awkward blind dates set up by well-meaning friends? I thought I’d share some
more amusing things you might think about trying—just to have fun being single. Then I'll show you creative ways to meet other singles.

Swinging Singles Fun

  • Not only does Starbucks have free Wi-Fi, but there are always interesting people hanging out there. You can leave the laptop at home, bring a deck of cards, buy a yummy drink and start playing actual solitaire. Invite an interested customer to a game of Crazy 8s!

  • New Deal Café also has free Wi-Fi. Enjoy some vegan dessert with coffee, curl up in the comfy couch and watch funny videos on YouTube. Share the dramatic hamster or guilty dog with a friendly solo patron like you.

  • Enjoy free sushi or a glass of wine at one of the Greenbelt Co-op’s taste testing events. You may meet a new friend over some California rolls or a French red. Then while standing in line to buy some vino, get the people in line to do “the wave” with you. I tried it today-a wave of three. Sooooo fun!

  • Follow a friend around (with their permission) and paparazzi them. Click click click.

  • Or get a GOOD friend to follow you, rolling out a red carpet/blanket/towel in front wherever you make an entrance. And what an entrance! However you must nail the royal wave before trying this.

  • Some options at a park: blow bubbles, hula hoop, or jump rope. BIG attention getters! Walk around and pretend to fall over trip wires.
    • Vaccuum your lawn.
    • For a day, speak with a fake accent, talk like a Pirate-arrrrggg, be a low talker (Seinfeld reference) or whisper all your answers. To really impress people, answer every question Jeopardy style. If asked “What are you doing tonight?”— answer, “What is the laundry and paying bills." Even the mundane sounds exciting!!

  • On a sunny day, try to outsmart your shadow. Enlist a bemused onlooker’s help.
    • Walk around a quiet place like the Greenbelt Library, softly humming the theme from "Mission Impossible." Whip your head around a lot.

If you are a single guy, here are some clever places to meet lovely women:

    • First, nail salons—get a clear manicure. Chat up the nice lady next to you getting a French manicure.
    • Second try yoga. You will reap the health benefits and maybe meet a new friend who will help you with your Downward Facing Dog. Stay away from the hot sweaty kind of yoga. Nobody is cute drenched in perspiration. Give the laughing yoga a try. Who isn’t happy going: “hahahahahahaaha” for 45 minutes?
    • And bonus suggestion, try crashing a Jazzercise class. They are always all women. Get your jazz hands ready.

Single ladies, I didn’t forget you.

    • Are you up for the outdoors? Anytime you visit REI you’ll find granola, earthy, crunchy fellows hanging out. Take one of the classes REI offers. Learn the essentials of camping, or hiking, or biking and bond with your dream tree hugger over... itch, itch, scratch, ARG poison ivy!!!! Tree huggers and their bugs and deadly plants.
    • OK, moving on, men love working out. Try a free gym membership for a month at a local place, then don’t join, get another free month somewhere else. The guys are hitting those free weights, using the ellipticals. Try to keep the drool of your chin. Get one of them to show you how the machines work. Let him be the expert even if you are MENSA. Then jog slowly next to your new crush showing off his rock hard abs.
    • Finally, find an activity and just try it. Staying social boosts those endorphins and gets you out there on the playing field. Enjoy, and don’t forget your red carpet!
